Check your safety

According to the International Transport Forum's (ITF) latest Road Safety Annual Report, (published late March 2015) South Africa was ranked the worst for number of road fatalities out of 36 countries – an alarming statistic that is not only costing the country valuable lives, but also an estimated economic cost of R307 billion per year, as reported by the study.

The report also shared that pedestrians are most at risk as they represented more than 35% of all reported fatalities. Further findings revealed that the motorised vehicle fleet in South Africa had doubled in the last 20 years. On average, only 30% to 40% of vehicles on our roads are insured. In the space of 21 years, between 1990 and 2011, the number of road fatalities increased by 25%. Alcohol is a major contributing factor of road incidents.
The South African Road Federation (SARF) reported that the road death toll in South Africa equates to a jumbo jet crashing and killing 1200 people each month, which is equivalent to approximately 40 people a day.
We are not winning the battle against deaths on our roads and this simply cannot continue. Managing this risk and educating people on road safety nationally is urgently needed.
Momentum Short-term Insurance recognises the increase in road fatalities across the country and wants to help South Africans become safer. Enhancing safety is a key step to proactively manage the risk of road accidents. Through simple but effective measures, we can all become that little bit safer to prevent harm or injury on our roads.
To assist you in understanding and improving your safety, Momentum Short-term Insurance has launched the Safety Score online tool, which measures your personal, home and environment, and vehicle safety. You get a score on how safe you are by completing the questionnaire. If you are a Multiply member, Momentum’s wellness and rewards programme, you will be rewarded with points to boost your status when you complete all the questionnaires, which translate into discounts with our safety partners.
Whilst Safety Score is open to all, Momentum Short-term Insurance policyholders qualify for a cash-back safety bonus. The more safety measures you take equates to a higher score, which translates to more rewards for you. If you are a Momentum Short-term Insurance policyholder and have Multiply, your cash-back safety bonus will be doubled.
In essence, you are actually getting rewarded for being safe!
